To help improve patient outcomes, primary care organisations should encourage the use of blood glucose self-monitoring (both pre- and post-meal) where indicated, but only as part of a structured education programme. In this way, patients can better understand when to test, how to act on test results and learn how to minimise wasted resources. Primary care organisations should also consider the use of simple meters of the highest performance, including coding, haematocrit and interference, which are discussed in this article. This article aims to highlight aspects for primary care organisations to consider in order to maximise effectiveness and cost-benefits in blood glucose monitoring.
