There is currently a lot of pressure within the NHS to make skill-mix changes, but guidance about how to do it is lacking. This paper examines different approaches used by eight trusts with a reputation for innovation in staffing and skill mix. A summary of ‘best practice’ is presented, and also a model for thinking about and implementing skill-mix changes.
